HMS Viknor started life as the Royal Mail Ship Atrato but In 1912 she was sold and became the cruise ship The Viking.  When war broke out in 1914 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and converted into an armed merchant cruiser and became HMS Viknor and joined the 10th Cruiser Squadron operating in the northern waters of the British Isles.

In early January 1915 she was sent to Kirkwall in Orkney where she took charge of a suspected German spy and a number of other prisoners and then left for Liverpool. But she never arrived. She sank in heavy seas on 13th January with the loss of all 300 of her crew, including George Shallis. Wreckage was washed up on the coast of Northern Ireland and it is likely that she hit a German mine. Her wreck was found in 2006.
